Dramatic movies about outlaws in the Old West usually follow a formula: the nomad roams the wild plains with nothing but what is on his back, on his belt, and the horse he rides in on. When that horse is stolen, it is as if the nomad’s life is taken from him. He can’t travel and, if he is stranded in the middle of nowhere, he’s as good as dead. This is why horse thievery leads to hanging, pure and simple.

In The Rover, the upcoming starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, that story has been updated, replacing a horse with a car and the American Wild West with the Australian Outback. The results look to be amazing.

From the press release:

Ten years after a global economic collapse, a cold-blooded drifter traverses the scorched Australian outback on a mission to track down the men who stole his last remaining possession – his car. When he crosses paths with a badly wounded member of the gang, he takes the vulnerable, naïve young man along as his unwitting accomplice.

If nothing else, you can expect that Robert Pattinson won’t be sparkly but dirty, in a good “got his ass kicked” way.

The Rover is set for release on June 20th, 2014.
