The Road to Crypticon Seattle: Things to Do

Crypticon has no shortage of events to attend. So many, in fact, that I had to narrow down my list about three times because I am not superwoman and I also need to eat and sleep or I will be a crabby Julie. I decided that besides perusing the vendors, I would pick one event per day to attend so I don’t wear myself out too much.

Friday, I am going to start my con off right with the Vaud’EVIL’le Opening Night Party. Two of my favorite things in life are drag queens and Burlesque. You put both of those things in the same place, I am there. With a cocktail hour featuring music by Scream Martin (like Dean Martin….anybody…) and DJ Delirious, horror themed drag performances by Sparkle Leigh, Isabella Extynn and Burlesque and Boylesque, how could you not attend this monster mash of a party? Did I mention it’s being hosted by my favorite drag queen of all time, the “Not today Satan” dame herself, Mama Tits? Yeah, I’m excited too.  They will be having a 21+ bar with ID but, I can’t be too hung over for Saturday’s festivities so I think one horror themed cocktail will be plenty for me.

Saturday is usually the “go hard or go home” day for me. It also tends to be the busiest. Since I couldn’t narrow it down, on Saturday I picked one event during the day and one at night. My day event is a Special FX Make-up Demo by Shawn Morse. Shawn has been head of the make-up department and head of SFX make-up for 5 years at Haunted Nightmare at the Nile haunted house. As a former SFX make-up artist, I am always on the lookout for opportunities to hone my craft and see others at work. This is a chance to see someone with some really great experience at work and learn some tips and tricks. This would be an especially great event to attend if you are a beginner SFX make-up artist and you want to watch a professional at work.

My night activity will be Prom of the Dead V. Yes this is the fifth Prom of the Dead and frankly, any chance I get to dress up as a zombie and dance the night away I will happily take. With zombie themed decorations, DJ’s, a cash bar (for those over 21 of course), and a prom photo booth provided by Nightmare at Beaver Lake Haunted House who would want to miss this?

I have always firmly believed that Sunday is reserved for brunch and napping with some intermittent horror movie watching. Since I’m a busy gal on the go and I have no time to nap on my last day of Crypticon, I will be making my last rounds through the vendors, maybe getting my picture taken with Doug Bradley and attending the Crypticon Seattle 2017 Awards Ceremony. This is where the big winners win big prizes for their writing, films and the coveted Crypticon Icon Award. I also might get a tattoo if the mood strikes me. A girl needs a permanent souvenir! The last day of a con is always bittersweet for me. Especially one that I love so much and look forward to every year, but the last day is your chance to gather all your strength and see the things you might have missed otherwise until they are gone until next year!

With everything that Crypticon has to offer, it’s difficult to fit all your favorites into just one weekend. That is why I suggest checking out their website and exploring all your options. Whether you are going for one day or all three, just checking out the vendors, getting an autograph or going to all the parties, you are sure to find some to tickle your horror fancies. Tickets are now on sale and going fast so, what are you waiting for. This is a screaming good time you are not going to want to miss!
