We live in a world where Hollywood seems to think that every good idea has already been taken. This leaves us with a never ending stream of remakes and reboots of films we know and love. Some are pretty good while others are total garbage. Here are the reboots to watch out for in 2017.

Universal Pictures

The Mummy

Release Date: June 9

The reboot to the reboot of the Mummy franchise is coming this year with none other than Tom Cruise at the helm. The franchise does take a slight turn by making The Mummy a princess hell bent on revenge for her untimely death. Cruise wouldn’t sign on to a film he didn’t believe in, but this movie has the potential to be cornier than Brendan Frasier’s Mummy films even though it looks a lot darker.

New Line Cinema

It

Release Date: September 8

It may be the most anticipated horror movie of the year – maybe even decade. The original It was an absolutely terrifying story by Stephen King which was adapted into a TV mini-series about a demon who takes the form of a clown to terrorize a group of kids. Not that the original was bad but, given the hype and a theatrical release, I am assuming we are in for something much more haunting than the It of 1990.

Shapiro-Glickenhaus Entertainment

Maniac Cop

Release Date: October 1

Maniac Cop is another remake which may actually turn out to be amazing depending on how they do it. The original tried to be dark and gritty but came off as corny with bad special effects and poor video quality. The original centers around a cop that comes back from the dead to exact vengeance on those who caused his untimely death along with anyone else who crosses his path. They have a chance to do this movie right and I hope they do as a closet fan of the original. Hopefully, we will see a Bruce Campbell cameo to legitimize the movie.

Seda Spettacoli

Suspiria

Release Date: Oct 13

When I first read that they were remaking this genre-defining Dario Argento classic, I was skeptical at best. Then I saw the cast including Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Chloe Grace Moretz, which gives me a little confidence. The original is about a young woman who goes to a dance academy only to find that the academy is just a façade for something incredibly evil. I would guess that, if this isn’t a scene for scene remake, it will stay pretty close to the source material.

New Line Cinema

Friday the 13th

Release Date: Suspended

Producers have been pretty tight lipped about the content of this Friday the 13th chapter, but it is believed to be another reboot and not a sequel to the 2009 Friday the 13th. Other rumors that have swirled around are a Jason Vs. Jarvis rematch and a sort of prequel with more focus on Jason’s upbringing, death, and resurrection. No matter what, it is guaranteed to be a Voorhees filled bloodbath that fans of the franchise will flock to no matter if it is good or bad.
